Only In Her Dreams
|

Marcus Derning,
Duke of Allendale and former Captain in the 73rd Foot Brigade
owes his life to the timely intervention of Sergeant Montague--an
intervention which cost the man his life. What better way to honor the
man’s memory but by marrying his daughter…if she would only have
him…
Sarah knows that
duty and honor are poor substitutes for love. A captain can not marry
the daughter of a common soldier. Much less a common soldier’s daughter
marry a Duke. Even deep in her heart where her irrational hopes linger,
she knows the only way she could ever be with Marcus is Only in Her
Dreams
Reviews:
Sarah Montague's
father was killed saving the life of another soldier. So when Captain
Marcus Derning comes to her rescue and gives up his cabin for her on the
shop back to England, he is returnin a favour. He does not expect to
find himself enchanted by this young woman. Nor does he expect the
carriage to have an accident and then to be shot at by...mysterious
rogues. His teasing as they travel together causes Sarah to run off
secretly, but he follows her to her cousin's mission in London. Marcus
asks her to marry him but she refuses him. How could she expect to marry
a man like that? She is the quartermaster's daughter and he is related
to a duke! There will be a lot more dark twists before Sarah can expect
to find happiness.
This is a good Regency story with plenty of pace and excitement. I
enjoyed it.

Sarah Montague was
just trying to get to London; she was alone since the death of her
father, Sergeant Montague, the quartermaster in the military for many
years. His death was as a result of his actions to save the life of
Captain Marcus Derning, and the Captain was determined to marry Sarah to
make up for losing her father. When they next met, Sarah was trying to
board a ship for London, but was being refused admission for lack of
room; they had, however, already taken her money. Captain Derning
demanded that they give his cabin to her. When she became aware, during
the night, that there was a severe storm, and knowing that the Captain
was still injured, she went and got him and insisted that he stay in his
cabin with her.
When the ship sailed into Portsmouth and the Captain found out that
Sarah intended to take public conveyance into London, he refused to
allow it and told her she would travel with him. During that travel,
they had much trouble, including an attempt on their lives. When they
were forced to stay overnight at an inn, he introduced them as husband
and wife. Upon finding that she had slipped off and taken separate
coaches, he followed her to the mission, in a bad part of town, where
her cousins lived. He adamantly pursued her, even declaring they were
betrothed. Still, the attempted murders continued.
There are many sub characters involved in this book. They have
strong, likeable traits which endeared them and enhanced the storyline.
It was easy to get totally involved in this tale and feel as if you were
part of the plot. As the cast increased and the murder attempts
continued, the story got better and better. Ms. Veronica Towers has done
a good job of telling the story in such a way that no one will want to
quit reading! It is a fine work which I can highly recommend.
