Kyrenia  Castle, Northern Cyprus

Kyrenia Castle in Northern Cyprus, stands on a site that was in use during the Hellenistic and Roman periods of 111-11 B.C, dominates the entrance to the harbour of Kyrenia village.

The first recorded reference to the castle was in 1191 when Richard the Lion Heart conquered Cyprus on his way to the crusades.

The original castle was thought to have been built around the 7th century by the Byzantines as a defense against the invading Arabs and the Lusignan Kings used the castle as a place of refuge and shelter during times of conflict and peace. A large portion of the present site was built by King John D’Ibelin between 1208 and 1211.

The castles moat which was used for protection against attack from the landward side, was once filled with water and used as an inner harbor that serviced the castle until 14th century.

Kyrenia has led a varied and colourful life, changing owners and coming under attack several times during her long and illustrious history. The Venetians first lay siege to the castle in 1373 in which she suffered heavy damage. In 1491, they captured and occupied Kyrenia and began structural improvements of the castle in accordance with their own defensive plans at the time.

Kyrenia castle remained in Venetian hands for the next seventy odd years until 1570 when it was surrendered to the Ottomans without resistance. The Ottomans brought a stability to the castle which lasted three centuries until the 1800’s when British Colonialism took over the island. During this time Kyrenia castle was used as a prison and police school and from 1963 to 1967 it was used as a military headquarters by the Greek National Guard.

Kyrenia castle also contains a 16th century tomb belonging to the Algerian Turkish Admiral Sadik Pasha who took over Kyrenia in 1570 as well as The Church of St. George, which dates from the Early Byzantine period. The church was original built outside the castle walls but when the Venetians began their re-fortification of the castle they extended the wall to encompass the church, protecting it from attack.

Healer of the Heart by Anita Hartsell of  Romance Reader at Heart

 Top Pick, Recommended Read

An exciting, fast-paced action adventure, HEALER OF THE HEART by Linda Mooney takes place in a medieval setting. The intense plotting and various intrigues add to the suspense, as power hungry men fight for control. Interesting and compelling characters tell a story that will hold you spellbound from beginning to end. This is a passionate romance that tells of the love between Querl and Maressa.

In the country of Bothe, the healer that is assigned to protect the life of the Dost, is murdered. Mareesa, a powerful healer, grasps this opportunity to save herself from an evil intent on possessing her. On arrival in Bothe, Mareesa meets Querl, the nephew of the Dost, and future leader of his country. From the very beginning there is a connection between them, and they soon find themselves falling in love.

Querl is more of a scholar than a warrior. He finds the knowledge he gains through his studies beneficial in protecting his country. When he finds his life in danger, he is grateful to have Mareesa's healing skills. Querl is immediately taken with the beautiful healer from Skandia. He will do everything it takes to keep his country and the woman he loves safe in the upcoming battles.

Querl is the future leader of his country. He is handsome and brave, even though he is more a scholar than a warrior. It is his ideals and values that drew me to him. The way he handles himself in various conflicts makes him a true hero, and I found myself wanting him to succeed in both his place in command and in his relationship with Maressa.

From the very beginning, the attraction between Querl and Mareesa is strong, their chemistry being almost magical in the way that it sparks between them. Their time together is not without mistakes and misunderstandings, adding a certain amount of tension to the story. There are also secrets that may stand in their way to happiness. Although there is heat and passion, it is how far Querl and Maressa are willing to go for each other, that have me calling HEALER OF THE HEART a wonderful love story.

Romantic Destinations Can Be Found In A Variety Of Ideal Locations

Romantic Destinations Can Be Found In A Variety Of Ideal Locations
By Andrew Regan

Whether you're going on honeymoon or are trying to enjoy some quality time alone with your partner, romantic holidays always carry the most pressure. You're required to provide the perfect vacation - and anything less spells potential disaster. However, there are many global romantic destinations to choose from so choose well and you're onto a winner.

Hawaii, for example, is one of the world's most popular destinations with people keen to have a romantic getaway. Fly to Honolulu and visit Hawaii's amazing beaches, lush greenery and volcanic land formations. Hawaii's turbulent natural history, along with its romantic history, makes it a very attractive location for honeymooners and people looking for romantic holidays in exotic locations. Many couples also cite Florida as one of their favourite destinations for a quiet, romantic break. Whether you're sunning yourselves in Miami or having fun together in one of the many theme parks, you're sure to have an exciting vacation for two in Florida.

If you're looking for romantic destinations outside America, you'll find plenty of holiday hotspots around the world that will provide you with exactly what you're looking for. If Eastern culture is more appealing to you, you could enjoy a romantic getaway in Istanbul, Turkey. Often seen as Europe's gateway to Asia, Istanbul provides holidaymakers with an intriguing mix of eastern and western cultures. Whether you spend your time hobnobbing in Istanbul's famous café scene, or exploring the infamous Topkapi Palace, an impressive relic of the Ottoman Empire, you'll love your romantic getaway in Instanbul.

If a historical destination for your romantic getaway is more what you're looking for, choose Cairo. Egypt's beautiful capital is home to an eclectic variety of museums, showcasing the best of its rich cultural heritage. And visits to the legendary pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are sure to provide a wonderful sight, helping make your romantic getaway all the more memorable.

Bali in Indonesia is an excellent spot for the ideal romantic getaway; for a romantic holiday with a difference, visit Bali's hot springs or have a Balinese massage in one of Bali's famous spas. Enjoy traditional Balinese cuisine and chill out on Petitenget Beach - it's a fantastic way to enjoy some luxury and relaxation with your sweetheart.

Many major hotel chains offer deals on romantic breaks across the globe, so you don't have to worry about your costs spiralling out of control. So remember: if you're looking for the perfect, stress-free 'do not disturb' getaway, you'll always have plenty of choice for where to take that ultimate romantic break.

Skyler Grey is 4th generation Floridian.  As a child she has always had a creative imagination from being a prankster to writing composition stories for her fifth grade class and winning their weekly contests.

Living off the west coast beaches of Florida allows for Skyler to carry her laptop to the salty shorelines, which helps to get her creative juices flowing while listening to the lazy tumble of waves at her feet.  When not writing, you can usually find her floating in the pool or entertaining friends.

Having a love for animals, Skyler has gone from taking care of deer, pigs, horses and goats, to simply two dogs.  Loving cats she's unfortunately developed an allergy to them within the past five years.
