I have to say this is really a great newsletter, just so fascinated with the Castle and all! This was my first newsletter from you so looking forward to more!

Merry Christmas.

 Cathie

Great job Stuart and Pam on the newsletter this month! (and every month of course). It's really a lot of work throwing those things together with all of the information! (and useful information at that - avoiding travel scams).

I enjoyed reading about Castle Wedderburn! For non-history buffs, like myself, I have to get some history somewhere!

Thanks!

Catina

Colditz Castle, Germany

The building of Colditz castle was begun in 1158 after Emperor Frederick Barbossa appointed Thimo I “Lord Colditz”. During the 13th century, the town of Colditz was established and the surrounding forests, meadows and farmland settled.

The middle ages saw Colditz castle playing an essential role as a watchtower for the German Emperors, thus becoming an integral part of the Reich territories of Pleibenland. At the start of the 15th century, Thimo VIII sold Colditz for 15,000 silver marks to the Wettin family, ending 250 years of rule by the Lords of Colditz.

In 1430, the Hussites attacked Colditz, setting the city and castle alight. Thirty years later in 1464, restoration work on the castle was started by Prince Ernst, who died at the castle in 1486. Under Frederick the Wise and Johann the Gentle, Colditz became a royal residence of the Electors of Saxony.

Colditz was never far away from trouble and in 1504; a servant accidentally set Colditz on fire. The castle, city hall, church and a large part of the city went up in flames. In 1506, rebuilding of the castle was carried out and new buildings were raised around the rear castle courtyard. During the first half of the 16th century the park at Colditz castle was turned into one of the largest zoos in Europe.

The castle underwent further modification during the reign of the elector Augustus of Saxony (1553 to 1586), with the alterations being carried out in the Renaissance style.

Around 1584, the castle became an administrative centre for the Office of Colditz and a hunting lodge and in 1694, the present owner, Augustus the Strong, began extension work on the castle. These extensions included a second courtyard and the addition of 700 rooms.

The castle was turned into a workhouse in 1803 by Frederick Augustus III, Elector of Saxony. For the next 26 years until 1829, it feed the poor, the ill, and persons under arrest. This chapter in the castles history was then transferred to an institution in Zwickau. In 1829 the castle became a mental hospital for the "incurably insane" from Waldheim. In 1864, a purposely built hospital was erected on the site where the stables and working quarters were previously located. It remained a mental institution until 1924.

When the Nazi party came to power in 1933, Colditz Castle was turned into a political prison for communists, homosexuals, Jews, and other "undesirables". It was not until World War II that allied prisoners were interned within its walls.

Towards the end of the war, in May 1945, the Soviets occupied Colditz. They turned the castle into a prison camp for local burghers and non-communists. Later the castle became a home for the aged, as well as a hospital and psychiatric clinic.

The final occupiers of Colditz castle vacated the premises on August 1, 1996, and since then the castle has been almost empty except for the occasional visitor.

JL Foster's - A Scandal: The Interception of Conor O'Keeffe by Crystal Ordonez

Sebastion Knight has finally made it to California. One movie under his belt and another in the works, things are looking very good for his dreams of the future.

The sound of his doorbell changes all of that. His former landlord, Qui Qui has decided to visit him. When the bigoted moving men cause a fuss, Sebastion is forced to call the police for backup. Sebastion is shocked to find out that one of the responding officers is no other than Conor O'Keeffe, brother or his dear friend John O'Keeffe, his best friend Cassandra's wife!

Before Sebastion can tell the ironic news to Cass, Qui Qui drops a serious monkey wrench into the works of Sebastian's future. The Asian ex-landlord has tapes of Sebastian's sexual escapades. Tapes that could ruin any future Sebastian may have dreamed about. And Qui Qui has black mail on his mind. The one person that could really help him is John O'Keeffe, but John is one of the men Sebastian is shown having sex with – a death knell for a Chicago policeman – so Sebastian is forced, in a way, to bend over and take it up the ass from his blackmailing friend.

However, Sebastian hasn't gotten as far as he has on good looks alone. He concocts a plan for revenge against Qui Qui, and after meeting Detective Conor O'Keeffe during the plans execution, he is able to spend an enjoyable time with John's homophobic older brother.

I trust one person and one person only with my characters. This is the second character that JL Foster has gotten his keyboard around and it is the second time that he has come through in spades for them! Because of this, I look forward to the many Cassandra's Cops supplementals that I know the future holds. LA Scandal: The Interception of Conor O'Keeffe is a fine addition to the stories of the O'Keeffe brothers!

Romantic Destinations Can Be Found In A Variety Of Ideal Locations

Cruise Lines Exclusive Private Islands

 by Genna Roberts

When choosing a Caribbean cruise you may well come across some islands you never even knew existed. Princess Cays, Labadee and CocoCay are all examples, and they all have one thing in common; they are used exclusively by the cruise lines who own them. So, forget busy ports, hassling street vendors and uncertain territory, and arrive in style at your own private island instead!

The majority of these islands are far too small for locals to reside in, and therefore have been leased out to the cruise companies, providing an exclusive getaway for cruise passengers and a valuable income for the local governments. The cruise lines have transformed the once "dead land" into their own mini paradise islands.

Typically situated in the Bahamas, these islands feature regularly on many Caribbean itineraries. Often reached by tender only, the islands lie uninhabited out in the middle of the ocean, waiting to indulge the lucky passengers who step ashore.

If you are lucky enough to visit a private island as a port of call, the real luxury is having the freedom to make the day as relaxing or as active as you want it to be. Whether floating out across the bluey-green coral reefs takes your fancy, or even parasailing, it's all on offer. Whatever you choose, a day in paradise can be surprisingly tiresome, so a big buffet style beach barbeque usually comes as standard.

Royal Caribbean comes out top in the owners' stake with access to two of its very own islands, Labadee and CocoCay. They are also pretty much the only cruise company to have ownership of an island outside of the Bahamas.

Of all the islands, Labadee is one of the most popular. Situated on the north coast of Hispaniola, Labadee is part of a larger, inhabited island, occupied by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Labadee boasts 260 acres of beautiful beaches, exotic foliage and coral reefs bordered by contrasting mountain slopes.

Land is reached by tender (an accessible small ship to transfer you to the shore when waters are shallow) which allows for an impressive and truly unique perspective of the cruise ship. Once ashore, Royal Caribbean have provided an abundance of activities and tours, including, kayaking, parasailing and jet ski hire - allowing guests to take a tour down the coast of the island - or, for the less adventurous, floating beach mats (great for both sunbathing, and floating out to sea on!), snorkeling around the tropical reefs and shopping for beautiful handmade local goods. Kids will be a million miles from boredom with an Aqua Park, featuring trampolines and inflatable slides.

CocoCay is Royals second offering, a small, secluded island situated around 50 miles from Nassau, encompassing 140 acres of Bahamian land. Again reached by tender, the island has recently undergone a huge renovation providing an improved guest experience. As CocoCay is an isolated island, the only people occupying it will be guests from the ship and staff; this creating both a relaxing and safe environment.

CocoCay features much of the same activities as its sister island, including the Aqua Park, jet skis and opportunities to parasail and kayak, but in addition, invites guests to snorkel out to sea to explore both a ship and plane wreck, which is not to be missed - if you are brave enough! To wash away the salt water a must is to sample either a "Coco Loco" or "Labaduzee" one of the islands signature cocktails.

The very first ownership of a private island took place in 1977 when the tiny island, today named Great Stirrup Cay, was purchased by Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Situated some 120 miles off Fort Lauderdale, this island has an impressive history of visitors including pirates who used the island as a safe haven, and more gallantly, American troops who occupied the island during World War II to defend the eastern shores of the U.S. Today, Norwegian Cruise Lines has transformed the once somber island into one big beach party!

Accessed by tender, this island will offer everything you would expect; a total of 5, varied, white sandy beaches, and crystal clear waters full of tropical fish, but what sets this island away from all the others is that the guests really have come to party! Fun is the main agenda here, so if you fancy competing in "Olympic" games or Limbo this is the island for you. The island also boasts volleyball courts and ping-pong tables, and for explorers, snorkelling and paddle boats with viewing areas in the base.

Whatever you choose to do here, it will be set to the sound of the live Calypso band which plays island favourites for listening or dancing to throughout the day.

Disney puts forward a strong competitor for top private island with Castaway Cay.

The only company to own an island which doesn't require a tender, here you can walk straight off the ship and into the fun! This combined with paved walkways and a tram service to different parts of the island also makes Castaway Cay the best choice for wheelchair users.

The 1,000 acre island is located 225 miles from Disney's year-round home port of Port Canaveral.

Parts of this island have been developed like no other island has, even featuring its very own post office! Yet Disney have appreciated the natural beauty of the land and has only developed 10% of the whole island.

Most cruise companies can offer a number of beaches on their island, but few can ensure one to really suit everyone's requirements. Castaway Cay has Serenity Bay, a 1 mile stretch of secluded beach reserved for adults only, where guests can indulge in massages in private cabanas overlooking the sea, Teen Beach, the name says it all! Or guests can head down to Castaways Family Beach where everyone is welcome to play in the lagoon, paddle out to sea or partake in organised beach games.

Disney can offer its guests so many options of how to spend their day on the island, including a 12 acre snorkelling site to explore, kayaking, paddle boats and parasailing. For the younger visitors there is a dig site for kids to find fossils and sharks teeth among other treasures, and also a water play area situated in the lagoon, just off the family beach.

Holland America is another cruise line in the running for best private island. They own award winning Half Moon Cay, situated less than 100 miles southeast of Nassau. Of the total 2,450 acres they own, 2,400 have been left untouched so guests can truly appreciate the beauty of the remote island.

The island features a 9 mile long beach, a wild bird reserve, a beach front bar, air conditioned beachfront cabanas along with shaded hammocks. And whilst the adults are relaxing, the kids can make use of Half Moon Lagoon, an aqua park which also features the Stingray Adventure Program which involves swimming with stingrays. Beach sports, parasailing, nature trails and windsurfing are all other options to fill your day on the island.

Much the same as the other islands? Not when you look at the amazing excursions offered. Horseback Ride 'n Swim excursion will allow guests to explore the island on trails that are accessible only by horseback. During the ride, experienced guides will share insight on Bahamian history, people and culture. The trail will lead guests to a deserted beach where you can enjoy refreshments and can take an unforgettable swim in the sea with the horses.

Although Half Moon Cay is reached by tender, which can sometimes prove difficult for less able guests, the island itself is wheelchair friendly and therefore another good choice for those who require this access.

Not to be out done by its competitors, Princess Cruises puts forward Princess Cays as its little piece of private paradise. Located on the southern tip of Eleuthera Island, 30 miles off Nassau, Princess Cays is 40 acres of fun and relaxation set in truly beautiful surroundings.

Unlike the majority of the other islands, Princess Cays is part of a larger island, and therefore does have neighbouring inhabitants. (Maybe better referred to as a private beach than private island then! although a very nice one at that) A range of equipment is available to hire from snorkels, aqua chairs and sea boards to kayaks to aqua bikes for the more adventurous!

Princess Cays is a place where it seems to be more about soaking in the beauty of the island and making use of all the cushioned chairs, tiki huts and hammocks settled between the palm trees than filling your day with water sports.

So, which is the best private island?

Over all, Disney provides an excellent island that caters equally well for families, young children and teens, as well as less able guests and wheelchair users. For those wanting a more "toned down" island, Holland America is also a very strong competitor. Each of the islands has its own unique attractions, but it really comes down to personal choice. And of course, although a fantastic part of your cruise, it is only one day, so other factors may well come higher when choosing which cruise is right for you, i.e. the cruise line, ship, remaining itinerary and of course the price!

So when you book your next cruise, look out for one of these islands on the itinerary and you can judge for yourself who really does own the best private island!

Jannine Corti Petska

I've been writing romances since the early 80s when I was a stay-at-home mom to three daughters. It wasn't until the mid-90s that I became serious about the business of writing. I sold my first book, The Lily and the Falcon, to Kensington in 1999.

Other books I've published are Foreign Exchange, a romantic suspense set in Italy and the U.S. in 1970. It covered everything from a soccer-playing hero to the mafia, a CIA heroine, the FBI, Red Brigades Terrorists, and so much more. And in 2006 Rebel Heart, a historical western romance, was released. It was a 2007 Aspen Gold Finalist.

I am partial to writing medieval romances set in Italy. I was born and raised Italian and know the culture well. The Lily and the Falcon was the first book of a four-book series set in 15th century Italy, which I hope will find a home soon.

I am currently a member of the San Diego Chapter of the Romance Writer's of America, RWA National, and PAN (Published Authors Network), along with many other online writing chapters.

My house is always full of laughter, especially when my grandchildren visit. I live in Southern California with my husband (my very own knight in shining armor) and three Rat Terriers. Although my husband is Czech, we are both active in the Order Sons of Italy in America . They have made him an honorary Italian.

 An interview with Cyan Bell

If you weren't an author what would you be doing now?

Probably sleeping a lot later, or going to bed a lot earlier! J

How do you prepare for writing a novel?

I have a ‘book’ with a number of plots written out, or I brainstorm with friends. I write everything I can out and then I just go. If there are things to researched, I will normally do that on the fly. I’m a cross between a fly by the seat of my pants author and an author who meticulously plans. lol

Where do you draw the inspiration from for your characters, the way they behave and act etc?

I usually have a good idea of what my characters are like when I’m writing. It might not go on the page but there are things I know about them, so I draw on what I think they would do. The back story of who they are plays a part, I think I probably try to think about how they would have grown as individuals with their life experience.

Who has been the greatest influence on your life and why?

I don’t think I could pick one person in particular. We are all a product of different events that have occurred in our life time. I think family has a big impact on who I am. Firstly growing up with my mom and dad, then my husband and now my children.

What was the turning point in your life that guided you to becoming an author?

Cervical cancer. I had surgery to remove abnormal cells so I wouldn’t develop cervical cancer. At the time and with my kind of luck I thought for sure I would have it. I realized there are worse things out there than getting a rejection letter from a publisher-so I took a chance.

Is there a moment in your life that if you had a chance to do again you would and why?

My wedding day. I should have remembered those lines! lol

Tell us something about yourself that is not that widely known that won’t embarrass you? We wont laugh, promise!

I’m not a huge fan of my feet. I like them for the fact they keep me up right, but I think professional pedicures are wrong!!! lol

What is your ideal romantic moment?

My romantic moment is a moment when my husband does something romantic that I haven’t had to tell him what to do to create a romantic moment.

If you had a chance to take someone special to any holiday destination in the world, where would it be and why?

Somewhere with snow. Can’t be bothered skiing? Oh what a shame, we have to stay in this warm cabin with a fire, and some hot chocolate.

Do you have any tips for aspiring authors who maybe looking at breaking into the romance industry?

A critique group is invaluable. Learn to be very patient. Take criticism gratefully because it will make you a better writer. Persistence!

If you where to cook a romantic dinner for that special loved one what would it be and also can we have the recipe?

Olive and rosemary palmiers. Pistachio crusted lamb roast with roasted sweet potato, baby spinach, and feta salad. For desert gelato.

Are you a romantic at heart and do you have silk sheets for that special evening?

If I am a romantic then I’m a difficult romantic. I’m not into the traditional romantic notions. I prefer to have something original planned. Don’t you feel sorry for my husband? Lol.

I don’t have silk sheets I have….well that’s my secret now isn’t it.

We would like to thank Cyan for taking time out from her busy schedule

Looking Forward to RT by Veronica Towers

I find the Romantic Times Convention to be one of the most exhilarating and exhausting experiences of my writing career.  As a reader at my first, I could afford to walk around in jeans and tops not worrying about my appearance.  I could haphazardly admire Pete DeCicco from afar( he was so handsome I almost fainted when he asked me about the dressings in the restaurant salad bar) and dance myself silly never having to worry about the impression I made.

My second RT I had a completed manuscript,.  I had to be on my mettle to be aware of anyone around me for that one chance to pitch my book.  As an aspiring author, while I was pitching stories, I was largely like anyone else in the same position…entirely forgettable.  Though my new friends from the beginning writer’s course taught by Judy McCoy (totally recommend the course by the way), thought that I had the determination to succeed.  They believed in me when I needed the boost to make a pitch of my newly completed novel.  I practiced my pitch on anyone who wanted to listen (and a few I am sure who did not).   The moment came when Robin one of the wonderful RT staffers managed to get an appointment for me with the editors of Samhaine Press.  Later I was told by someone who overheard my pitch that my enthusiasm and joie de vivre was captivating. (Just reporting what I was told by a stranger who followed me into the ladies room!)  I was on cloud nine when I was asked for a full by Christy Brashears.  My glow did not wear off as I had screwed up my courage to sign up to dance with the hero of my imagination Peter DeCicco!  A wonderful man who patiently put up with the gushing enthusiasm of many of his fans including me, he even promised to do my cover if the time came.

The next RT came with the knowledge that I was attending as a published author of not one but two full length novels and a contribution to an anthology.  No not with Samhaine as you probably already have guessed but with a fledgling new press managed with vision by Stuart Barza and Pam Seres here at DCL Publications.  While I was yet an unknown I still needed to be “on” every time I left my room.  I had bookmarks to hand out, people to smooze, models with whom to flirt(yes I did discard the shyness),  and books TO SELL.  Ines Dinn one of my colleagues at DCL Publications said she could not leave me alone in the bathroom for I would start chatting up strangers(yeah I might have overdone it!)  Because I was not only pitching myself to prospective readers but with the demise of several small presses I was also trying to attract new talent to the DCL family.  Whereas I might have had a little down time the previous years I had none now…and definitely used the acquaintance with Julian Fantechi Playgirl Man of the Year to my advantage.  There is nothing so impressive to starry eyed newbies than after being seated with me I gesture to the breakfast line and soon we are joined by the one of the most handsome men at RT that year(Pete did not come).  At the end with all of the ups and downs when the time came to go home, I was totally ready exhausted but happy to realize that I did everything I could to promote myself and DCL.

This year promises to be even bigger with the return of several Mr Romances of years past.  There will be new friends to make, books to pitch and of course lots of talented handsome male models with whom to flirt.  I will be selling not only my books but the Seriesse line of skin care products with none other than Peter DeCicco.  Surprising isn’t it I could not even talk to him the first year and now he is my business associate and a friend.

Hey but that’s RT for you!
